Mishandling Guns and an Unsecured Storage Leave One Dead and Three Wounded

In St. Albans, West Virginia, Steven Loftis, 53, accidentally shot himself in the abdomen and died. The discharge allegedly occurred because the firearm was not handled safely and was stored in Loftis’s pants pocket instead of a holster. The case will be reviewed by the state medical examiner’s office.

A 3-year-old in Cloverdale, Alabama, found an unsecured, semi-automatic handgun in their grandparent’s bedroom and shot themself in the chest. The child was airlifted to the hospital in stable condition and has since been released. The incident is under investigation.

After sneaking onto a rifle range in Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania, two juveniles were accidentally shot inside a car trying to hide a gun from police. They were treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
