Five Dead and Seven Injured in Unintended Shootings

In Indianapolis, Indiana, 5-year-old Hakiem Scott apparently shot himself with an unsecured 9mm gun he found in his home. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but died shortly after. His father, 25-year-old Jahbar Scott, was arrested on an allegation of neglect of a dependent causing death with final charges pending.

In Semmes, Alabama, during a fight with 52 year-old Walker Coleman, 37-year-old Brenton McVay accidentally shot and killed his twin brother Trenton. A physical altercation between Coleman and the McVay brothers escalated when Coleman stabbed Brenton McVay with a knife. Brenton then started to pistol-whip Coleman, causing the gun to discharge hitting his brother in the chest killing him. Coleman was wounded in the hand by the discharge and both Brenton McVay and Coleman are in the in hospital in stable condition. The district attorney’s office is still considering possible charges.

After watching the high school graduation in Lenoir City, Tennessee, Christopher Sean Lampkin stood up to put his jacket on, when a gun he was carrying accidentally discharged, striking him in his right inner thigh. The bullet from the .38 caliber Derringer struck a femoral artery causing significant blood loss. CPR was administered and he was transported to a nearby medical center where he died. Police continue to investigate.

In Stockton, California, Richard Walker, 13, was accidentally shot and killed by his 16-year-old brother. Richard was a 6th grader who loved playing basketball; the spokesperson from the school disctrict said, “[h]e’s been described by some of his peers as a great athlete, a baller, and someone they really loved.” His 16-year-old brother is now in juvenile hall on suspicion of manslaughter, negligent discharge of a firearm and weapons charges. Police are still investigating.

In Los Angeles, California, a man unintentionally shot and killed himself with his own gun during a traffic stop. Police spotted the gun when they stopped him and in trying to prevent the gun from being fired, it accidentally discharged striking him. He was transported to the hospital where he died.

During an attempt to assault someone, a man in Boston, Massachusetts, accidentally shot himself in the hand. State police were nearby and the man was arrested and transported to the local hospital. Many details are unknown and the incident is under investigation.

In Akron, Ohio a 15-year-old girl was hospitalized in serious but stable condition after being accidentally shot in the face by 18-year-old Levell Gary. Gary was taken into custody and charged with felonious assault.

During a shooting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, three innocent people were injured including an 11-year-old who was shot in the leg. The girl, a 22-year-old man, and a 55-year-old woman were all shot and taken to local hospitals in stable condition. It is unclear what started the shooting and no arrests have been made.

And in Kenosha, Wisconsin, an 18-year-old accidentally shot his 3 year-old sister Iyana in the thigh while babysitting her. Iyana was airlifted to the hospital and is expected to survive. Her brother was taken into custody and is being held on a probation violation while appropriate charges are considered. Iyana had just celebrated her third birthday on May 4, and was described by her mom as “beautiful, happy and carefree.”
