Adult Arrested Child Death (18 and Under) Child Under 18 (as Shooter) Juvenile Arrested North Carolina

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2020

Details are scarce about an incident in which 5-year old Amani Barringer was shot in the neck by her 14-year old brother with an unsecured gun.  Amani was home, in Charlotte, North Carolina, with two teenagers age 14 and 15, when she was killed.

The 14-year old was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter.  An adult, who was not identified, and who was apparently not present when the accident occurred, was charged with failing to secure a firearm.

“This morning, there was a 5-year-old girl who got up and had breakfast and played. And now, that 5-year-old girl is not with us anymore,” a Police Officer told reporters. “And I don’t have a good explanation. And I know when I finish with my briefing you all are going to have questions on why and who and what, and what I can tell you is this — that none of that matters in a sense that, regardless of what caused it, there’s a 5-year-old little girl who’s not alive right now.”
