Six Unintended Shootings of Children: Two Dead, Four Wounded

Children playing with a gun resulted in an unintentional shooting that killed a 10-year-old girl in Roswell, New Mexico. Few details are reported other than that the incident is still under investigation.

In Indianapolis, Indiana, 11-year-old Jordan Robertson was accidentally shot and killed in a home that is primarily occupied by juveniles. It is unclear if any adults were present at the time of the shooting and few details have been reported. Detectives believe that Robertson “accidentally shot himself,” however the investigation ongoing.

A woman in Chicago, Illinois, was parking her car and reached for her gun to move it. While handling the gun it unintentionally discharged, grazing an 11-year-old girl who was also in the car. She is listed in good condition at the hospital.

Few details have been reported about a 2-year-old boy in Memphis, Tennessee who was accidentally shot in the hand. The boy’s father, Kedarious Hawkins, told police he kept the gun in a holster tucked between couch cushions. Police searched the apartment and found a loaded Heckler & Koch VP9mm handgun in a duffle bag in a bedroom. Police also discovered that the gun was stolen, and now, Hawkins faces two counts of aggravated child abuse as well as a theft charge.

In Akron, Ohio, after playing in a youth football game, 7-year-old Tyren Thomson, Jr., was unintentionally shot in the chest and after surgery, is in stable condition at the hospital. Few details have been reported about the shooting, but police do not believe Thompson was the target.

And a 16-year-old girl is in stable condition after being accidentally shot by Gilmer Eversole, 22, in Barren Springs, Virginia. Eversole told deputies that he had removed the magazine and had cleared the 9mm handgun before it unintentionally fired. He has been charged with unlawful wounding, reckless handling of a firearm and public intoxication.
