Young Boys Find Loaded Assault Rifle at Home and Both are Injured

It took two days for Desiree Felder, a 26-year-old Baton Rouge, Louisiana mom, to acknowledge a gun accident that injured her son and her nephew. One of the children is three and the other is six. 

Police were called to a hospital Monday over reports of two children with gunshot wounds.

Investigators determined the boys were at Felder’s home on Saturday when one of them found a loaded “assault style” weapon  and fired it, injuring both children. Felder ultimately admitted that she fell asleep while watching the children and then woke up to a loud bang. She claims she found a “small cut” on one of the children and cleaned it with a disinfectant. Felder’s sister said she noticed several cuts on her son when she picked him up Monday morning. When she questioned Felder about what happened, she was told her son fell off a bike.

At the hospital, medical staff found numerous cuts and determined both boys had pieces of shrapnel embedded in their bodies. Both children are expected to survive. However, Felder was arrested on multiple charges, including child cruelty.
