Derrick Curtis, an alderman in Southwest Chicago, Illinois, shot himself in the wrist today while cleaning a gun. He is in good condition at the hospital.

And in Salem Township, Minnesota, an unidentified 70-year-old man shot himself in the leg, also while cleaning a gun.  According to the report, a police deputy applied a tourniquet, as the man’s pant leg was soaked with blood, and it was beginning to pool on the ground below him. The man told the deputy he thought “he had unloaded a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun in order to clean it  but had not realized there was a bullet in the chamber.  The gun went off when he pulled the slide back.
