Three people were unintended victims of gun violence today, including an off-duty police officer who was mistakenly shot at his home by another officer who mistook him for an armed robbery suspect.

In Athens, Texas, an 8-year old was shot in the head with a bullet that came out of a wooded area behind his home.  He was standing on his back porch when he was struck. Authorities say he was home alone with two other children at the time.

In Valley, Alabama, a 17-year old was shot and killed by another 17-year old who was unloading a shotgun at the time of the incident. There is an ongoing investigation.

And in Vancouver, Washington, a police officer was attempting to shoot an armed robbery suspect and instead struck off-duty police officer, Donald Sahota.  The incident occurred at Sahota’s home after a substantial struggle between Sahota and the suspect.  Another officer arriving at the scene apparently mistook Sahota for the perpetrator and fired the round that killed him.
