In Kalamazoo Michigan, 25-year old Shaquwan Allen Hughes was sentenced to six months in jail after accidentally shooting his mother, Carmen Renee Hughes, while under the influence of drugs.  Two years of probation will follow his prison time.

Hughes pled guilty to one count of “discharging a firearm under the influence” after an incident on March 27, 2020 in which he accidentally fired a gun in the backseat of a car.  His mother was in the front seat.

“This was an unfortunate accident that happened as the result of the careless handling of a weapon while under the influence of drugs,” the prosecutor said. “This case is a reminder for all of us of the dangerousness of mixing guns and intoxicating substances and the deadly outcomes that can happen even though not intended.”
