One Child is Killed, Two are Injured, in Gun Accidents Today

Seven-year-old Everett Deaver died at the hospital, after he was shot in the abdomen by another child in a residence in Jacksonville, Arkansas. Everett’s father, Michael Deaver, age 31, left the loaded gun accessible on the top of a desk while he went next-door. One of the children in the house got a hold of the gun and fired it, fatally striking Everett. His father was arrested and charged with manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a minor.

In a Nashville, Tennessee apartment, a seven-year-old child was grazed by a stray bullet that came from a neighboring apartment. The child was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A teenager, who detectives determined to be the person handling the gun, fled with her boyfriend after the shooting. No other information was reported.

And at a playground in Detroit, Michigan, with his father close by, a five-year-old boy was struck in the arm by a stray bullet while riding his bike. The police chief said that tips from the community helped police identify the 15-year-old suspect who was taken into custody. They believe the suspect was firing shots into the air when one of them hit the child. No charges have been announced in this ongoing investigation.
