21-year-old Innocent Bystander is Killed 

“He was just in the wrong place,” said the adoptive father of 21-year-old Brandon Garcia, who was killed in a shooting in Yonkers, New York. Four teenagers were also struck when a 15-year-old gunman fired eight rounds at a group of people. Investigators believe that it was a targeted shooting and may be gang related, but that Garcia was an innocent bystander. 

Garcia turned 21 last week. He moved to Virginia with his adoptive parents when he was six, but was visiting his biological mother in New York for his birthday. “The reason we left New York was so he could be in a better atmosphere, a better school system,” said his adoptive mother. His father added, “[e]verybody has a gun: 15, 12 years old. It’s the reason we went to Virginia to get my son away from here.”

The recovered 9mm Taurus semi-automatic handgun was reported stolen, and the 15-year-old suspect faces several charges including murder and attempted murder. The four teenagers injured in the shooting, including a 14-year-old girl, are expected to recover.
