Three People Injured in Gun Accidents
An older man in Lehi, Utah, appears to be another victim of celebratory gunfire over this holiday weekend. He was struck in the back by a BB or airsoft pellet, and was taken to the hospital in stable condition. X-rays revealed the trajectory of the small-caliber bullet, showing that it was probably fired into the air. “This incident serves as an important reminder that bullets fired into the air must return to the ground and can cause serious injury or death. Celebratory or reckless gunfire is dangerous and illegal, and the Lehi City Police Department urges the public to handle firearms responsibly,” said officials. They are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
In Columbus, Ohio, Maria Courts, was found by police laying near a vehicle with a gunshot wound on the right side of her body. Witnesses told police that Courts was sitting in the driver’s seat while she and other people were sitting in the vehicle drinking and smoking. A backseat passenger, 28-year-old Gianni Romeo Sampson, was handling a gun that fired, striking Courts. She is expected to survive; Sampson was charged with felonious assault involving a weapon.
And in Lewiston, Maine, 45-year-old Derek Bourdon took himself to the hospital after shooting himself in the hand. Bourdon, who is a felon, was uncooperative with police during their investigation. He has been charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
