Child Killed in Accidental Shooting and Two Men Injured During Youth Deer Hunt

Devonte Housley, Jr.

In Youngstown, Ohio, 7-year-old Devonte Housley Jr. was shot and killed in what police believe is an accidental shooting. Detectives are still investigating the details in the death of the boy and are not saying if he found the gun and shot himself, or someone else unintentionally shot him. “He was such a sweet kid, one that didn’t deserve this. No child deserves this,” his grandmother said.

In Minnesota, there were two accidental shootings during the statewide youth deer hunting season. From a county sheriff’s office, it “…allows supervised youth to hunt with firearms before the traditional deer hunting opener.”

Gary Peters, 50, was seriously injured by a 10-year-old he had taken deer hunting. He was instructing the child how to unload a bolt action Ruger .270 caliber rifle. The child accidentally pulled the trigger during the process, and Peters was struck by a bullet in the buttocks.

And a 45-year-old man was shot in the leg in a deer stand by his 12-year-old daughter. “She had shot a deer and accidentally fired a second shot that hit her father in the leg,” said the sheriff’s office. A tourniquet was placed on his leg until he could be taken to the hospital.
