Houston Toddler Shoots Her Four-Year-Old Sister

In Houston, Texas, a three-year-old girl found a gun and shot and killed her four-year-old sister. Investigators said,  “the preliminary investigation showed that the two children had been inside an apartment with five family members and friends and each of the two children’s parents believed the other was watching the kids.” Instead, while the children were unsupervised, “they found an unsecured and loaded semi-automatic pistol.”

“You’ve got to make sure you’re a responsible gun owner,” the Sheriff said. “Secure your weapons in a safe place. It’s got to be more than just to tell the kids not to touch the weapons.”

As always, authorities failed to consider the possibility that gun manufacturers should bear responsibility for designing weapons that even a three-year-old can fire. Similarly, regulators share that responsibility by failing to take control of gun safety in order to mandate safer gun designs.
