Adult Arrested Adult Injury Law Enforcement Action (At Time of Report) North Carolina

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022

A Zebulon, North Carolina police officer shot himself Monday night during an attempt to arrest a suspect in Wake County. Zebulon Police say that Officer Colby James responded to a suspicious car at Zebulon Community Park. The suspect, 51-year-old Deserie Byrum, was subject to an outstanding county warrant. When James tried to arrest her, Byrum drove off, dragging James behind her. He fired his gun, shot himself and sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm.  He has since been released from the hospital.

After a chase, Byrum was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, damage to property, and careless and reckless driving.
