In Wichita, Kansas, 13-year old Waylon Treat was accidentally shot and killed today.  His 16-year old brother had brought home a gun which the boys were examining when it fired. Adults were at home at the time of the incident, but they were apparently unaware that the boys were handling a gun.

Waylon was a student at Truesdell Middle School.  The school issued the following statement after the incident:

“Good afternoon Truesdell parents, this is principal Victoria Manning. I am sorry to share with you some sad news that one of our students, Waylon Treat, passed away this morning. He was a wonderful child and we will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

“Truesdell is a large family and we care deeply about all of our students and staff. We have counselors available at school for anyone who needs support. When a tragic death occurs, it often helps a young person to talk about it. As always, please feel free to call the school if we can assist you in dealing with this sad situation.”
