A Carlisle, Ohio high school junior was accidentally shot in the face Monday evening at a friend’s home.  The girl was shot through the left cheek with a .22 caliber handgun and the bullet is lodged behind her left ear.  She is expected to survive.

At the time of the incident, the teenager who shot her called 911. He said, “[s]o, I was holding this gun and I didn’t know it was loaded or cocked, and I pulled the trigger, and I didn’t think it was cocked, and it went off, and we need an ambulance immediately.”  When the dispatcher asked who shot the girl, he said, “Me. I didn’t know the gun was loaded.”

The girl’s mother said charitably, “I am sure he’s devastated and he’ll have to live with this the rest of his life.”  In reporting on the condition of her daughter, she added, ““She’s doing all right. God was definitely with her.”

According to doctors, the wound will need to heal before the bullet can be removed from the back of the girl’s jaw.
