Three Children Dead in Unintended Shootings

In Salinas, California, Natalie Romero Puente, an 11-year-old fifth-grade student, accidentally shot and killed herself with her 18-year-old brother’s Glock pistol. The gun had been illegally modified to function fully automatically.  A classmate’s parent said, “"My daughter's taking it pretty hard. They were all classmates, teammates on volleyball and the girl's a pretty good girl. The school's taking it pretty hard."

In Lagrange, Georgia, Ayden King, a two-year-old, found his mother’s loaded pistol in his home and used it to shoot and kill himself. “It was in a location that was believed to be secure. However, that location turned out not to be secure, and the child was able to get hold of the gun and accidentally shoot himself,” a police lieutenant said.  “The babies are dying in our community. and something needs to be done about it. People are crying. People are really upset about it,” a local gun violence prevention leader said.

Davad Brooks, a 16-year-old in Miami, Florida, was charged with manslaughter after accidentally shooting 15-year-old Barry Ellis, an eight-grader. Ellis had brought a gun to a gathering to show it to some friends and Brooks grabbed the weapon and accidentally fired it.  Ellis was struck in the chest.  Ellis died at the hospital.
