Three More Unintended Gun Injuries
In Shreveport, Louisiana, a 6-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after being hit by a stray bullet. Her condition is described as “life-threatening.” She was playing in her front yard when the occupants of two vehicles began shooting at each other as they traveled down her street. Describing it as “a senseless act of violence,” a police spokesperson said their initial investigation “indicates the girl was ‘caught in the crossfire’ and was struck at least one time in her upper body.
A Mansfield, Ohio police officer shot himself in the leg after pulling his service weapon while investigating a burglary. According to authorities, the officer, Charles Hamilton, “approached the scene on foot and drew his service weapon, which … discharged and struck him in the right leg.”
In Weslaco, Texas, Joseph Baltazar, 17, was handling a gun in the backseat of a vehicle and unintentionally discharged it. An 18-year-old was struck in the back. The teens discarded the weapon before contacting police. Baltazar was charged with aggravated assault.
