Adult Death New York No Charges Filed

SUNDAY, APRIL 12, 2020

In Colonie, New York, Denzel Grimes, a 29-year old man, accidentally shot and killed himself in a hotel with a 9-mm pistol.  The gun apparently discharged and struck Mr. Grimes in the groin. He later died of the wound.   Police identified Grimes’s gun as a “Jennings/Bryco Arms, Model 59,” a type of cheap handgun that is illegal in New York and in several other states.

The gun manufacturer Jennings, and its successor Bryco, were sometimes referred to as “Ring of Fire” companies.  The so-called “Ring of Fire” companies produced guns which in popular culture became known as “Saturday Night Specials,” cheap pistols notorious not just for their associations with acts of violence, but also for defects and breakdowns. Those defects include misfires as well as cracking and melting frames.  Although such guns have been banned in many states, there are many still in the hands of prior buyers, contributing to gun violence and gun accidents.

The absence of national design safety standards for guns of the type that exist for most other potentially dangerous consumer products, including toasters and coffeemakers, allowed these cheap and dangerous guns to be produced for decades without consideration of the dangers they cause to their owners and to the public.  Mr. Grimes is simply the latest casualty.

  1. I knew Denzel personally. I met him January 1, 2020. He was the best oerson that I’ve ever met he was kind and giving. He was loving. He saved my life and was the only to see me in the hospital. What happened to him shouldn’t have happened at all it breaks my heart every day when I think of him and it’s almost 4 years of this accident that changed my life and so many others. Every day I wish this was a huge nightmare that eventually we wake up from. But nope that’s not the case. My thing is how did he get the Jennings/Bryco Arms model 59 if it’s illegal in New York like I wish guns were completely banned you know like I know it’s safety but what happens when their not used for safety cause not everyone in the world is bad right at least I have to think that. I just wish I had one more day. One more hour. One more minute. Just a second. Like the mind is an endless photo album and video camera so I got that but sometimes that not enough. I know I would have told him I love you one last time. Thank you for listening. I guess this was my closure. My Denzel live on forever and may he rest in peace. Forever in my heart.
