Off-duty Agent Shoots Student, Mistaking Water Gun as Real
In Yulee, Florida, an 18-year-old high school senior was shot by an off-duty official who thought the student’s water gun was real. The injured student is expected to be OK.
The school superintendent had sent a letter to parents two days before the shooting, warning them about the dangers of the banned, unofficial tradition called “Senior Assassins,” where seniors use water guns to “eliminate their target.” In a statement from the sheriff, “[t]hese types of games may seem innocent, but when you have young people sneaking around in the dark wearing masks and carrying objects that could be mistaken for weapons, you’re creating a potentially deadly situation.” The sheriff’s office is investigating.
