Two-year-old Boy is One of Three Victims Who Were Injured in Gun Accidents Today
In Owensboro, Kentucky, a man was shot in the leg when a gun unintentionally discharged in the apartment next door. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries when the bullet came through the wall. The neighbor, Michael Chavez, 24, returned home from a bar with friends, and admitted “that he was showing off a firearm when a negligent discharge occurred.” Chavez told police that his brother took the gun after it fired and left. He has been charged with assault and wanton endangerment, and several drug charges unrelated to the shooting.
In Centralia, Illinois, a 14-year-old girl was shot by a 15-year-old boy who was handling a firearm that unintentionally discharged. She was airlifted to the hospital for treatment. She and a friend were visiting the boy and another teen in the home where the shooting occurred. The 15-year-old boy was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
And a two-year-old boy in Grand Rapids, Michigan, shot himself in the hand with his father’s gun, and was treated at the hospital. According to court documents Nakobi Thomas said he generally kept his guns in a lock box, but was “unable to say” where he had left the gun that morning. Police recovered the 9mm handgun and bullet casings in Thomas’s car. They seized other guns from the home, including one that was loaded and easily accessible. Thomas was charged with a safe storage violation with a minor present causing injury.
