Ten Unintentional Shootings Result in Eight Injuries and the Deaths of Two Children
A Ville Platte, Louisiana 3-year-old girl shot herself with an unsecured gun. She was airlifted to Baton Rouge because of the extent of her injuries, where she later died. Nineteen-year-old Nathan Ben was charged with criminal negligence and negligent homicide. Ben was in the house with the girl and another unknown person, and police have not yet been able to find the gun that was fired by the child. There is an ongoing investigation.
In Hartford, Connecticut, Se’Cret Pierce, 12, was shot in the head and killed during a drive-by shooting. Three males standing on the sidewalk were also wounded by the gunfire, and appeared to be the intended targets. Se’Cret, a middle-school student, was sitting in a parked car when she was shot. Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin appealed to the three men to cooperate with investigators.
A child from Raleigh, North Carolina was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other information has been reported but the investigation is ongoing.
In Wichita Falls, Texas, a 16-year-old girl was unintentionally shot by 19-year-old William Edward Smith, when as he rummaged around in a bag that contained a gun it fired. Smith was in the back seat and the bullet struck the girl, who was in the right front passenger seat, in the lower back and leg. Smith was arrested on two charges and released on bond.
In Detroit, Michigan, an 11-year-old boy is recovering at the hospital in stable condition after being accidentally shot. The boy was jumping on a bed when a gun discharged, but there are no other reported details about the shooting. Officials will continue to investigate.
A 15-year-old from Lompoc, California was a participant in a violent incident when he was accidentally shot by one of the other shooters. He is in the hospital in critical condition with a life-threatening injury. There is an investigation into the incident.
Another shooting in Michigan, this time in Burton. An 11-year-old girl accidentally shot a 6-year-old boy in the leg. Investigators are trying to determine how she got the gun, and no charges have been filed at this time. The boy is expected to fully recover.
And there were three accidental shootings in Chicago, Illinois:
A 22-year-old woman was standing on the sidewalk with a group of people when she was wounded by a gun that accidentally discharged. She is in the hospital listed in good condition. No one is in custody, but the incident is under investigation.
A 26-year-old man was wounded in the foot by a stray bullet. He’s in the hospital in good condition. Police determined that the shooting was accidental and no arrests have been made.
And a 52-year-old man is listed in critical condition after being shot in the neck when a gun accidentally discharged. Police are investigating.
