At least five children were killed or injured today as unintended consequences of other people’s gun violence. The grim toll:
Mariyah Lacy, age 5, of Jackson, Mississippi, was killed when her mother’s ex-boyfriend shot into her mother’s car in an argument over money. Mariyah’s two siblings were uninjured, but her mother was grazed by a bullet. The shooter, Robert Jackson was arrested and charged with murder and four counts of aggravated assault.
A Houston, Texas seven-year old was shot and killed while in bed by a bullet fired in a drive-by shooting. He was home with two brothers and his mother when the shooting occurred. Police are investigating.
In Portsmouth, Ohio, Zsailynn Amari Conley, a four-year old sitting on his porch, was killed in a shooting that police are investigating. They believe the boy was an innocent bystander. The boy’s day care teacher described Zsailynn as a “smart and outgoing kid and the best child anyone would want to have.”
A 13-year old boy was shot in the forearm on a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania street. The specific circumstances of the incident have not been reported other than that the shooting was accidental.
Finally, in San Antonio, Texas, a 12-year old girl about to start a water balloon fight with a sibling outside her home, was struck in the foot by a round fired inside the apartment complex where she lives. She is in stable condition at the hospital and police are investing the source of the gunfire.
