In Granite Quarry, North Carolina, a middle school student shot and killed himself when he “mishandled a gun” that he thought was unloaded. At this time, the family has asked for privacy and we ask for everyone to keep the family in thoughts and prayers,” the local police chief said. “We have no further releasable details. However, the investigation is still ongoing.”

Anthony Thorpe, a Nashville, Tennessee 2-year old, is in “extremely critical condition” after he found a gun on a bed in his home and shot himself in the head.  His 23-year old father, Jeffery Thorpe, is wanted for questioning in connection with the accident.  Thorpe and the boy’s mother dropped Anthony off at the hospital but have not returned.  The gun that Anthony used to shoot himself has not been recovered.

Three other people were injured in gun accidents today.  One of the accidents occurred at a Greenwood, Indiana mall where a 17-year old found his mother’s gun in a car and put it in in his waistband. The gun discharged in the parking lot and the teenager was struck in the leg.  At a What-a-Burger drive through in San Antonio, Texas, a man was showing a girlfriend his gun when it accidentally discharged. He was struck in the arm.  And in Lee County, Alabama, a person accidentally shot themselves in the arm and leg.  No foul play is suspected.
