Authorities in Clinton Township, Michigan are expected to charge a man whose gun went off during a physical altercation with his younger brother. The two men were wrestling on the floor when the gun fired and the younger man was killed. The precise circumstances causing the gun to go off are unclear.
Although the police referred to the incident as a tragic accident, the older man, age 23, is expected to be charged with “careless discharge of a firearm causing death, a misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison and a $2,000 fine.” “I think until you see a newspaper story or TV report that some people don’t think about the proper way to handle a gun and this is what we get,” the prosecutor said. “Here, we have someone using a weapon, doing exactly what you shouldn’t do with one. Now we have someone burying his brother.”
Also today, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania High School student accidentally shot himself in the leg during his gym class. It is unclear how the boy got the gun past the school’s metal detectors. Also unclear is how the 18-year old got access to the gun. His school was placed on lockdown after the incident.
