The Bennettsville, South Carolina Police Department issued the following statement about a gun accident that injured two children today, reprinted here in its entirety:

“The Bennettsville Police Department Detectives’ Division was called in reference to a shooting at a residence inside the city limits of Bennettsville, SC. A preliminary investigation has led detectives to conclude that a minor child was able to access and retrieve a handgun that was located inside the location. While [in] possession of the gun, the minor child is believed to have accidentally fired the gun striking two juveniles. At this time, the investigation is still in the early stages but the incident is being treated as accidental. Both victims were transported by EMS for medical treatment. Both individuals are in stable condition. This investigation is still on going,”
