A 15-year old boy in Pittston, Maine shot himself in the hand with his grandfather’s two -shot Derringer today. Police said the boy went behind a garage wearing a coat that belonged to his grandfather. The boy found the pistol in a pocket and “tried to pull the hammer back, when his thumb slipped off, releasing the hammer and causing the firing pin to strike a .410-gauge shotgun shell.”
Police found that there was an empty .410-gauge shotgun shell and one Colt .45 bullet still loaded in the chamber. Police do not intend to file charges in connection with the incident.
