Steven Johnston of Lincoln Park, Michigan was arraigned today on child abuse charges after his three-year old daughter, Skylar, shot herself in the head after finding his loaded gun. His family called the accident a preventable tragedy. Mr. Johnston was not home at the time of the accident. Skylar was left in the care of her mother.
Mr. Johnston was arraigned on $15,000 bond and ordered not to have contact with any of his children. Skylar’s great grandmother said, “[s]he needs her daddy. She loves her daddy.” After the court hearing, her great grandfather added:
Unload your damn guns. Take a bullet out of the chamber. Put a lock on them. Don’t be stupid like this incident. I got a 3-year-old granddaughter who is probably not going to make it. Don’t be stupid.
No one apparently asked how its possible to buy a gun with a trigger-pull light enough that a three year-old can fire it.
