Gun Accidents Involving Law Enforcement Officers; One Woman Killed, Four Other People Injured

In Ocala, Florida, a county deputy, Leslie Boileau, killed his girlfriend when he accidentally shot her in the head while they were cleaning guns. According to Boileau, he and his girlfriend both drank three margaritas at dinner. When they came home, they decided that Boileau would show her how to disassemble and clean an AR-style rifle and 9mm handgun with supplies that had just arrived. He admitted that they were pointing guns at each other.

“Boileau stated he grabbed the rifle and dry-fired it one time. On the second dry fire attempt, Boileau had forgotten that he placed the loaded magazine into the rifle which shot one live round in the direction of (his girlfriend), ultimately killing her,” reads the arrest report. With the sheriff’s office for eight years, Boileau was immediately fired. He has been charged with manslaughter.

Inside the men’s locker room in the district building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, an off-duty officer’s gun unintentionally discharged when he dropped it, grazing another officer in the leg. The injured officer was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to be OK.

In Manassas, Virginia, a law enforcement officer shot himself in the leg during an active training exercise. His injuries were non-life-threatening.

And during a firearm training drill in Decatur, Alabama, an officer was grazed in the leg by a discharge from his own gun, and another officer received a minor injury from a bullet fragment. Both were treated at the hospital and released.
