11-year-old Injured During Fatal Shooting at School Bus Stop

While waiting at a school bus stop in Annapolis, Maryland, an 11-year-old boy was injured, and 36-year-old John Simms Jr. was killed, when 31-year-old Roscoe Jerome Jones shot Simms multiple times. According to a witness, Jones shot Simms in response to an argument that started between two mothers. The 11-year-old, who is not related to Simms, was shot in the foot and is expected to recover.

In a letter from the principal to parents and staff “many of our students were traumatized this morning when they witnessed a shooting at a bus stop.” The school, which is less than a mile from the shooting, was placed on “secure” status, and a nearby county government building and a parking garage where closed for a short time “out of an abundance of caution.”

Police are asking the public for help in locating Jones, who remains at large and is considered ‘armed and dangerous.” He was charged with murder and assault of a juvenile. “To think the bus stop is not a safe place to be standing with your fourth grader is tragic,” said an alderwoman, it’s “a tragedy all around, not just for that community, but for Annapolis as a whole.”
