Three-year-old Shot Himself with Father’s Gun; Two People Shot in Gun Cleaning Accidents, One is Killed

In Albany, Georgia, a three-year-old boy is recovering after he shot himself with his father’s unsecured gun. The boy’s father, DeQuan Sims, age 30, was charged with reckless conduct. The police chief said, “[a]s much as we understand that Georgia is a constitutional carry state, everyone still needs to be responsible for their weapons.”

In Rockford, Tennessee, Shelby R. Williams, age 34, was accidentally shot and killed by 48-year-old Charles Scott. Scott was cleaning a gun that discharged, hitting Williams in the chest. Scott has been charged with reckless homicide and unlawful possession of a firearm.

And in a Naperville, Illinois apartment, a 33-year-old woman was shot in the leg by Carnell Polsey, age 33. Polsey and the woman had been in a long relationship with two children between them. He had been staying with her for a few weeks. She didn't allow guns in the apartment and asked him to leave when she found him with one. He said he was cleaning it, and as she walked away, the gun discharged. She and her sons, ages 9 and 15, told police that Polsey appeared intoxicated, but she felt the shooting was unintentional. Police recovered a .45 caliber 1911 and a polymer P90 “ghost gun.” Polsey was charged with aggravated battery and reckless discharge of a firearm.
