Two Children Accidentally Kill Themselves With Unsecured Guns

In Radcliff, Kentucky, a six-year-old boy fatally shot himself in the head, after he found a loaded gun under a pillow in the family bed. He was airlifted to the hospital where he died. Damarco Callen, age 26, admitted that he put the gun there, and left to take a plate into the kitchen when he heard the gunshot. He was charged with first-degree assault, unlawfully permit a minor to possess a handgun, and first-degree wanton endangerment.

In Baltimore, Maryland, ten-year-old E’vaa Sewell was visiting her grandmother when she found a loaded gun and fatally shot herself in the head. Her grandmother, 51-year-old Alethea Mitchell, came home after work to find E’vaa lying in a pool of blood on a bed. Police found a gun at the scene, a “pink diamond arms 9mm handgun,” that they determine had been stolen in 2017. They also recovered a magazine and one live 9mm round in the bed where the girl was found. Mitchell told police the gun belonged to an ex-boyfriend. She has been charged with possession of a stolen firearm, firearm access by a minor and possession of a firearm with a felony conviction.
