Three Victims Hurt in Gun Accidents, Including Three-year-old Boy

A three-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the hand playing on the floor in the bedroom of an apartment in Tomball, Texas. His mother was lying in the bed, and she, and the toddler’s father, 25-year-old Lucas Nahum Benitez, brought the boy to the hospital for treatment. The boy’s mother told police that she owned a gun that she kept in a purse with the safety on, but police were unable to find the gun or the purse when they searched the apartment. According to court documents, Benitez asked a friend to bring a purse and a child’s bookbag to the hospital, saying they belonged to the three-year-old’s mother. He also told the friend that he had “tossed” the gun. Benitez has been charged with deadly conduct involving a discharged firearm, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

In his Tuscaloosa, Alabama home, a juvenile accidentally shot another juvenile male while playing with a handgun. The victim was taken to the hospital with a serious, but not life-threatening injury. The shooter’s mother was home at the time of the incident and said she didn’t know her son had a gun. He has been charged with assault and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm.

And a Veteran’s Affairs police officer accidentally shot himself in the leg while drawing his pistol from its holster during a training session in Cicero, New York. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The sheriff’s office said that the investigation into the incident will be handled by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
