Two People Killed, One Injured, in Accidental Shootings Today
While hunting on private property in Lexington, North Carolina, 40-year-old Zachary Wilson Cash was accidentally shot and killed by a hunting partner. Cash and the other person were about 120 yards apart. Cash was walking around in the woods trying to drive deer to his partner. His partner saw movement and fired, thinking it was a coyote. There is an ongoing investigation.
In Griffin, Georgia, 18-year-old Jesse White accidentally shot and killed himself trying to rob a drug dealer. White was with three friends when he pulled out a gun during the attempted robbery that unintentionally discharged, mortally wounding him. His friends, a 15, 17 and 19-year-old, were all arrested and charged on multiple counts including reckless conduct, and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony.
And in a Dallas, Texas home, 18-year-old high school football player, Xavier Mayfield, unintentionally shot a teammate while celebrating their team’s championship win. The victim is in stable condition. Mayfield was in a bathroom handling a rifle, when the victim who was standing in a bedroom, called out to him. As Mayfield turned toward the victim the rifle fired, hitting the victim in the neck. Mayfield was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
