Three Children Injured After Finding Loaded Guns in Closets

In an accidental shooting, a two-year-old, and a three-year-old, in a residence in Newberry, South Carolina, were each injured with a single gunshot wound. One child was wounded in the hand, the other in the foot. They were both taken to trauma centers for treatment and are expected to survive. Apparently the children accessed a gun that was stored inside a closet, but it’s not clear which child handled the gun when it fired. Both parents, the mother, Tyresa Najae Cunningham, age 28, and the father, Tyleik Jaewon Sanders, age 21, were arrested. The gun was not recovered; Sanders told officials he threw the firearm into the woods near the home. Cunningham is charged with unlawful neglect toward a child, and Sanders is charged with unlawful neglect toward a child and obstruction of justice.

And in Dumfries, Virginia, a four-year-old boy shot himself in the leg with a gun he found in a closet. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His father, 26-year-old Gerardo Anthonio Mejia, was charged with allowing access to firearms by children. There is an ongoing investigation.
