Five-year-old Boy Shot Himself in Head With Gun Found in Bedroom

A five-year-old autistic boy, shot himself in the head with a gun he found in a bedroom in his home in Eustis, Florida. The boy’s frantic mother ran to her neighbors, a flight nurse and a police officer for help. The nurse applied pressure to the wounds, and called dispatch for a helicopter. The boy was airlifted to the hospital for surgery and remains in critical condition. After interviewing the boy’s parents and sister, the police report states, “[redacted] advised that firearms were typically stored inside the front bedroom closet, on the top shelf, inside their original manufacturer lock boxes. She believed that [redacted] should not have had access to the weapons, and that he normally slept in the same room with his father.” No arrests have been made, but the investigation is still active.
