Unsecured Guns Found by Children: Two-year-old Killed, Four-year-old Injured
In a Port St. Lucie, Florida home, two-year-old Kaydin Florissant was with his mother in the master bedroom when he found a gun and fatally shot himself in the head. Police determined that the fiance of the boy’s mother owned the 9 mm handgun used. The fiance and the boy’s 24-year-old mother were arrested on a charge of culpable negligence—allowing a minor access to a firearm resulting in injury or death. Kaydin’s mother was additionally charged with possession of a firearm or ammunition by a felon.
And in Louisville, Kentucky, a four-year-old boy found the gun his father left on the nightstand when he went to take a shower. The boy was taken to the hospital with injuries that appear to be not life-threatening. His father was charged with assault, criminal abuse of a child and wanton endangerment.
