17-year-old Killed in Accidental Shooting

Deaza Barkley

In a home in Queens, New York, Deaza Barkley, a 17-year-old high school cheerleader, was accidentally shot and killed. A 16-year-old boy was playing with the gun when it fired. The gun’s serial numbers were scratched off, making it difficult for investigators to determine who owned it. The 16-year-old was charged with manslaughter and gun possession charges.

The community gathered for a vigil to remember Deaza, who friends and family called “De-De.” She was hoping to joining the Air Force when she graduated. According to her mother, Deaza had recently worked on a school project about gun violence. Considering how best to describe her daughter “…think of a perfect snowy day, and your favorite hot chocolate.”
