Innocent Bystander Struck by Bullet Walking Home From Work

Walking down a street after work in Brooklyn, New York, 32-year-old Alia Abdul-Raheem was struck by a stray bullet that came from a car that drove past her. She was in shock at first and hurried home, where she realized she had been shot and went to the hospital. Her injury was described as a graze wound by police.

The apparent intended target of the drive-by shooting was a 15-year-old boy who was shot in the ankle, and taken to the hospital in stable condition. Abdul-Raheem said she never felt unsafe in her neighborhood before this. “The kid who was shot was 15. I could tell the kids were young. They don’t even know what they’re doing — why [do they have] guns? It was 7 o’clock on a Tuesday. If we had better gun control, this would have never happened,” she said.

The investigation is ongoing, and so far, no one has been charged.
