Woman Accidentally Killed by Brother-in-law on Christmas Day

In Schaumburg, Illinois, 50-year-old Kellie Barnett was unintentionally shot and killed by her brother-in-law Daniel Garcia, age 52, who thought she was an intruder. Barnett was staying with her sister and Garcia in the guest bedroom, and according to court documents, Garcia kept a loaded Glock 9mm semi-automatic handgun in a holster on the side of his bed, and had forgotten that his sister-in-law was staying with them. Barnett was found in the hallway outside her sister and Garcia’s bedroom door. Police recovered the Glock, and the fired bullet and cartridge case. Garcia has a valid Firearm Owners Identification Card and a concealed carry license. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter of a family member.
