Accidental Shootings Injure Four People, Including Two Children

In a county park in Hixson, Tennessee, a five-year-old boy left alone in the family car found an unsecured, loaded gun there that fired while he was playing with it. A round grazed his leg causing a non-life-threatening injury. No charges have been filed at this time, but the sheriff’s office will follow-up on the investigation.

In Louisville, Kentucky, a ten-year-old boy shot himself in the leg and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police are investigating.

In Etters, Pennsylvania, Jeffrey Senkbiel was accidentally shot in the chest with a friend’s “antique” Harrington & Richardson Arms Company revolver-style handgun that was normally displayed on the wall. Senkbiel had asked to see the gun. The owner, Joseph M. Silva, age 18, placed a single round in the gun but “when he went to close the firearm, it discharged, expelling the round into the chest/abdominal area” of the victim requiring him to undergo emergency surgery. Police recovered the gun, and Silva has been charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangering another person.

And in Washington, D.C., a secret service agent accidentally shot himself while handling his weapon. His injuries were not life-threatening. The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility will investigate.
