One Killed, Four Injured in Gun Accidents

In Yuma, Arizona, 19-year-old Raymond Ruiz was accidentally shot and killed with a rifle. A 23-year-old man told police that he was cleaning the firearm when it discharged, but it was later determined that another man, 19-year-old Angel Campa, was handling the gun when it fired. Campa fled the scene, but later turned himself in and was charged with second-degree murder and disorderly conduct with a weapon.

In a parking lot in Chesapeake, Virginia, a teenage boy accidentally shot another teenager, who sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Police are actively investigating the incident.

After the driver of a vehicle refused to stop during a police traffic stop in New Orleans, Louisiana, the two men in the vehicle, Christopher Mitchell, 33, and Eric Abdul, 24, led police on a chase before crashing the car and taking off on foot. While running, Mitchell shot himself. He was taken to the hospital and Abdul was taken into custody, as police try to determine who was driving. Charges are pending for both men.

And two people were injured during firearm training exercises:

An employee of the school district in West Palm Beach, Florida, was injured during a civilian training exercise at the sheriff’s office’s gun range. The employee’s gun unintentionally discharged and they received non-life-threatening injuries to the hip area.

And in Warren County, Pennsylvania, a corrections officer was injured after a gun unintentionally discharged during a training exercise. No other details have been reported and the officer is expected to fully recover.
