Eight-year-old is Killed, and Four Other Children are Wounded in Gun Accidents
An 8-year-old is shot and killed in a home in Deer Park, Washington. A group of children ranging in age from 5 to 14 years old found a handgun that one of them unintentionally discharged, fatally striking the child. Deputies say no other information will be released at this time because of the young age of the children and out of respect for the grieving family.
A middle school student in Columbus, Georgia was shot while at school. In a news release from the school district, it was reported that the loaded gun was hidden in a Chromebook case when it accidentally discharged injuring the student. No other details, such as who had the gun or information about the student’s condition has been released at this time.
A 17-year-old girl is in critical condition after being accidentally shot in the head in Nags Head, North Carolina. A group of friends were staying in a hotel, when 22-year-old Ashton Mills mishandled a gun that unintentionally discharged wounding the girl. Mills has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and felony obstruction of justice. A second man has also been charged in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
In Columbus, Ohio, police found two juveniles in a stolen car with gunshot wounds. One was wounded in their lower torso, the other had a gunshot wound in their left hand. Police believe the shooting was accidental, but it is still unclear which one fired the gun. Both have been charged with receiving stolen property, but additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
