Five Unintentional Shootings: Three Involving Teens, Two Involving Security Personnel; One Dead, Four Injured
Yoel Lopez, 21, was unintentionally shot and killed by 18-year-old Josue Cruz in Nashville, Tennessee. Lopez was in a parked car with his cousin and Cruz, when an AR-style pistol that Cruz was playing with, went off, striking Lopez. Cruz fled the scene, but was later arrested and charged with criminal homicide.
While inside a home with a group of friends in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a 17-year-old was holding a gun that unintentionally fired, hitting another teen in the leg. The victim is in stable condition at the hospital, and the 17-year-old is cooperating with police during their investigation.
A 14-year-old boy in Decatur, Illinois, severely injured his left arm when he accidentally shot himself with a gun he was handling. After life-saving treatments at the hospital, he is currently listed in stable condition, but is expected to have permanent disabilities. The gun used is still unaccounted for, as police continue to investigate.
An armed security guard, 29-year-old Nana Agyire, was preparing for his day in a backroom of the Department of Motor Vehicles in Arlington, Virginia, when he accidentally shot himself in the hand. He has been charged with discharging a firearm in a public place.
And in Greenwood, Indiana, a state trooper was exiting a helicopter after a patrol flight, when his gun unintentionally discharged, striking him in the upper leg. Tourniquets were applied to the wounds and he’s currently in stable condition at the hospital. The shooting is under investigation.
