14-Year-Old Arrested After Accidental Shooting of 13-year-old
A 14-year-old boy was arrested after the accidental shooting death of Kaleb Lane, a 13-year-old Topeka, Kansas eighth grader. Although police described the shooting as accidental, they charged the older boy with second-degree murder, a crime defined in Kansas as “the killing of a human being committed intentionally or unintentionally but recklessly under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.” The precise circumstances of the incident have not been reported.
The school superintendent said, ““We ask that families and staff respect the privacy of the family as local law enforcement completes their investigation. Please keep Kaleb’s family and all that are impacted uplifted in your thoughts and prayers.”
