Lindell Mays of New Orleans, Louisiana was arrested today after a four-year old boy was shot in the parking lot of a local store. Mays was charged by New Orleans police with mishandling a firearm “with respect to minors.” It is unclear if the boy got ahold of the gun in a car when he was unattended or if Mays fired the gun unintentionally. The boy is in stable condition at the hospital.
In Neeses, South Carolina, a 25-year old was shot in the neck by an 11-year old who had gotten ahold of a gun. The relationship between the boy and man is not reported. A witness alleges the 11-year-old shot the man with a “short stock 22 without the butt.”
In Champaign, Illinois, a man trying to unholster his legally owned gun in a parking lot accidentally shot himself in the hand. He left the scene, but was picked up at a local hospital and charged with negligent discharge of a gun.
And in Merced, California, Alan Brooks, age 44, discharged a shotgun at his 17-year old son at 2 AM, when the boy entered the home from the backyard. Brooks apparently believed that his son was an intruder because he thought all of his family members were home at the time of the incident. The boy suffered wounds to the torso, arm, and thigh. The boy is in intensive care at the hospital.
