Three people accidentally shot and killed others in gun accidents today. Each accident was caused by the shooter’s own negligence but was likely facilitated by faulty gun design. Two of the incidents occurred in vehicles.
In Raleigh North Carolina, Barri Rogers, 21, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his friend, Ahmad Johnson, also 21. According to Rogers the two were sitting in a car in the parking lot at Saks Fifth Avenue when he switched off the safety on his gun and it fired. While it sounds improbable, there are defective guns that can go off when the safety is released. Rogers has been released on bond.
Arturo Barraza of Midland, Texas, 21, shot and killed Estrella Moreno, also of Midland, when he was waving a gun around while driving. Moreno told police that he was traveling in a vehicle when he grabbed a firearm that was in the driver’s side door. Barraza said he began “waving his pistol back and forth, pointing it to the left and right,” when the firearm discharged. Like Rogers, Barraza has been charged with manslaughter. His bond has been set at one million dollars.
Jah-son Jones, 18, of Pemberton New Jersey, and his friend, Nasiah Carson, 19, were playing with a gun which they both believed to be unloaded, presumably because the ammunition magazine was removed. However, there was a round in the chamber. Jones pointed the gun at Carson and squeezed the trigger. The gun went off and Carson died at the hospital.
