A nine-year old boy was shot in the hip in an Oakland, California freeway shooting. He was driving with a woman in a vehicle that was being chased on I-580 and shot at. Seeking to evade the shooting, the car exited the freeway but then crashed into a truck. Witnesses say that the crashed vehicle had 8-10 bullet holes.
The shooting of the nine-year old innocent bystander illustrates an increasing problem with freeway shootings, which by their nature, create potential for injuries to bystanders. According to the report, this was the second freeway shooting in the Bay Area today. Earlier in the afternoon, an off-duty San Jose police officer’s vehicle was shot while he was driving. The officer wasn’t hurt, but a bullet hole was found in the vehicle’s passenger door.
