Many people were injured in gun accidents today, with mostly minimal press coverage.
Two of the accidents occurred in the Philadelphia area. On the Drexel campus in West Philadelphia, a man accidentally shot himself in the leg inside a Shake Shack restaurant. Given the number of recent mass shootings, it is not surprising that the accident caused momentary chaos inside the restaurant. Nearby, in Upper Darby Township, a 6-year old apparently found a gun inside his home and shot himself in the hand. No further details were reported.
In Gastonia, North Carolina, a 12-year old accidentally shot an adult inside his home. The adult’s injuries are not considered life-threatening. The Department of Social Services is determining whether charges are warranted. The accident merited a few lines in a story about four shootings that occurred in Gastonia today.
In St. Louis, Missouri, police concluded that a three-year old girl was accidentally shot in her home. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening. The resulting news story ran just four sentences and lacked any discussion of whether the girl had shot herself.
Also today, in Lagrange, Georgia, a 17-year old accidentally shot another 17-year old with a handgun. The boy was treated at the hospital and released. After an investigation, officers determined that the shooter would be charged with reckless conduct and illegal possession of a handgun.
