Florida A&M University baseball player Dalton Harrell, age 21, was accidentally shot in the chest and killed today in Bainbridge, Georgia. He was with friends in the parking lot of the local country club when a rifle discharged in what authorities called a “freak accident.” After investigation, no arrests were made. The circumstances of the accident have not been publicly described.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the Harrell family,” said Florida A&M’s director of athletics. “We are asking that all of Rattler Nation please keep the family and the baseball student-athletes in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.” His coach added, “[h]e was a great young man, a great baseball player, a great son to his parents, and a great all-around person. He was going to be impactful for our team this year on the mound, and more importantly, he impacted a lot of guys in a short time at FAMU.”
